Sister School in China

Wharenui has a sister school relationship with Lanzhou Experimental School, Gansu Province, in north-west China. This was the area of China where New Zealander Rewi Alley did most of his work. He worked and lived in China for 60 years, helping the people improve their standard of living. The city of Christchurch also has sister city status with the province of Gansu.

Rewi Alley's father, F. J. Alley, was the first principal of Wharenui School, when it opened in 1907. Rewi was also a pupil at the school.

Our school is very fortunate to have this relationship with a school in China, and we often play host to visiting delegations of visitors from China.

During the week, the children of our school receive 30 minutes teaching in Chinese language, custom and culture. The children enjoy this and see it as a special part of our school.

Chinese Language Classes
Classes in Chinese language are available at the school. Classes for beginner adults and for those who are more advanced areheld on Tuesday evenings.

Chinese language classes for children are held at the school on Saturday mornings. These are very popular, and attended by a large number of children.
