The Wharenui School Culture Group works for an hour each week learning Maori songs, karakia, karanga, and haka. Children volunteer for this group, and soon find that they are required to work very hard to achieve a high standard of performance.
They perform at culture festivals in Christchurch, for visiting dignitaries, and on many other occasions. The children enjoy these performances very much, and feel a sense of pride in belonging to the group and the school.
The group is trained by visiting teacher in Maori.
Similarly, our Pacific Island group learn song and dance from various Pacific Island cultures, and also perform at culture festivals and on many other occasions.
