Located in the heart of Riccarton, Christchurch, Wharenui school is a full primary catering for children from 5-13 Years- (Years1-8). We are tucked away from a busy area and enjoy a park- like setting. It is like a big secret. Wharenui is a multi-cultural school and we value the diversity and the family-like atmosphere that brings.
Our close proximity to the Wharenui Pool means we are one of the lucky schools who can provide swimming without needing to travel. We are a decile 2 school, which means we are very lucky to receive support from Kidscan, Duffy Books, Fruit in Schools, and Milk from Fonterra to name a few.
Te Reo Maori is taught by our Kaiako, Sherrilee, who visits on a Tuesday. She also leads our Kapahaka group . Samoan language is offered by Tumama, who also leads our Pasifika group. Thanks to the Rewi Alley Language School, we are able to offer Mandarin as a language. Mandarin is touted as the language of the future.
We aim to give our children great educational experiences and provide many opportunities for our Year 7 /8 students, developing leadership skills and self management skills in preparation for High School. We offer many sporting opportunities. We also have a Choir, a Music Group and a Ukelele group .
In 2011, we welcomed Van Asch School of the Deaf Junior school onto our site and this has added to the diversity at our school. At Wharenui School we use the three official languages of New Zealand.
2013, saw the blessing and opening of two purpose-built classrooms, to accommodate the special learning environment, that Van Asch children need.
